چکیده

Two methods for fostering collaborative behavior are compared: a feedback-mechanism to scaffold collaborative behavior, and use of distributed learning resources. Based on recent research on what constitutes effective collaboration behavior, we developed a coding scheme to categorize learner-learner interaction as collaboration. In a collaboration environment for learner dyads specifically implemented to test our hypotheses, a human observer identified, in parallel with students’ interactions, instances of real collaboration, and gave online feedback. In the same two-factorial design, we varied the resources available to the partners. The influence of these interventions on outcomes related to knowledge acquisition, problem-solving, group climate and collaborative behavior was tested. Results suggest there are benefits in providing a feedback approach in fostering collaboration and enhancing problem-solving quality.

IMPACT OF SYNCHRONOUS COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION ON EFL LEARNERS’ COLLABORATION: A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS

For the last two decades, computers have entered people’s lives in an unprecedented manner in a way that almost everybody considers life without them rather impossible. In recent years, researchers and educators have been trying to discover how computers and the Internet technology can maximize the quality of language instruction. As such, the present experimental study sought to investigate th...

Situated action in a distributed, technology supported community of practice

The realms of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW) and computer supported cooperative learning (CSCL) have specifically tackled the research issues of understanding the nature of interaction and collaboration in order to design work situations and software to support them, and furthermore to investigate how cooperative practices are shaped by technology. These issues are also dealt with i...

Collaboration Support for Mobile Users in Ubiquitous Environments

The idea of supporting collaboration with computers goes back to the work done by Douglas C. Engelbart. In his seminal demonstration in 1968 [1], he introduced and demonstrated remote collaboration between two persons through sharing computer screens and using audio-visual communication channels over a network. However, it took almost twenty years before the vision introduced by Engelbart was t...

Title: Monitoring students’ collaboration in computer-mediated collaborative problem-solving: Applied feedback approaches

The research describes a methodology for applying designand management-based scaffolding techniques aimed to enhance cooperative behaviour. Based on assumptions of how successful online learning groups act together we developed feedback-based mechanisms that aimed at contributing to group functions of well-being, member support, and productive learning outcomes. The collaborative online learnin...
